While trying to save his fellow villagers from a demon-god, Ashitaka, a brave intuitive boy, comes in contact with it and is inflicted with a deadly curse that will eat his body and make him insane. He is then forced to leave his village forever to go in search of a cure and travels to the forest inhabited by animal gods where the demon came from. There he finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest gods, led by a savage girl raised by wolves named Princess Mononoke, and a village who crafts weapons led by lady Eboshi.
Trivia: When it was released, Princess Mononoke was the most expensive Anime ever created with a buget of under US20$ Million.
It was also the most successful Japanese, and moreover non-US film ever created. It earned over 150$ million dollars at the Japanese box office. It kept it's title as the most successful Japanese film ever produced until Miyazaki's Sen to Chihiro (Spirited Away) surpassed it by bringing in over $200 million dollars in Japan alone.
Mononoke-hime was included when Disney and Tokuma signed an agreement in 1996 giving Disney exclusive worldwide rights to a number of Studio Ghibli films. Part of the deal stipulated that Disney must release Mononoke theatrically in the United States. Disney agreed to this without ever seeing Mononoke.
When Disney finally viewed the movie for the first time it was a shock to them to see that it was nothing like what they expected, they expected a cute, childrens Anime similar to Miyazaki's previous movies, but they were contractually obliged to release it.
The North American theatrical run of Princess Mononoke was an absolute failure, the most successful international film ever created (at that time) earned just 2.4 million dollars in US and Canada.
Mononoke-hime is currently number 122 in IMDB top 250 movies of all time. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119698/)
