The Hurt Locker shines on the Red Carpet

March 8, 2010

The 82nd Academy Awards ceremony brought once again glamorous dresses and sparkling jewels on the red carpet, plus many surprises when it comes to the winners of the golden statuettes. In the attempt to revive the ceremony, the Oscars producers gave Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin the job to entertain the audience, which proved to be a very inspired decision.

Regarding the lucky winners, this year we had a lot of firsts, and a lot of unexpected...no need to say more because here's the list of winners:

Best Picture: The Hurt Locker

Although “Avatar” was the Oscars' favorite, “The Hurt Locker” has succeeded to beat the odds and win a total of six awards (three more than “Avatar”).

Actor in a Leading Role: Jeff Bridges for a “Crazy Heart

This is the fifth Academy Award nomination, and the first Oscar for Jeff Bridges. He has also been nominated for “The Contender” in 2000,  for “Starman” in 1984, for “Hunderbolt and Lightfoot” in 1974 and for “The Last Picture Show” in 1971.

Actress in a Leading Role: Sandra Bullock for “The Blind Side

Surprisingly or not, this is the first time Sandra Bullock was nominated for an Oscar. Also, she's the first actress to receive in the same year an Oscar, for “The Blind Side”, and the Golden Raspberry Award, for “All about Steve”.

Actor in a Supporting Role:
Christoph Waltz for “Inglorious Basterds”

This is the first Academy Award nomination for the Austrian actor Christoph Waltz.

Actress in a Supporting Role: Mo'Nique for “Push”

This is also the first nomination and implicit Oscar for Mo'Nique, in her real name Monique Imes-Jackson.

Directing:
Kathryn Bigelow

Although at this category the competition was more fierce than ever, among the nominees being James Cameron and Quentin Tarantino, Kathryn Bigelow has succeeded to take the statuette home, being the first woman director to ever do that in the history of the Oscars.

I have to admit that 2009 was a very fruitful year for the movie industry: a lot of good movies with emotional and captivating plots, amazing visual effects and matching distribution. I can only hope that 2010 will surpass such performances.
