Hello, Tammy
No, you don't really need the whole Nike+ iPod package, if you own the latest iPod Nano, 5th gen, which has a built in pedometer.
By accessing from the iPod's main menu Extras > Fitness > Pedometer , you can start a workout session, in which the iPod will count your steps, the calories you burned and the duration of the workout. You can, of course, listen to music during the training or listen to radio. When you're done, return to the Pedometer and press the Center button to stop the session. Every session is recorder in your calendar, and you can acess them any time in Fitness > History.
