How to set Compass Mode and Read Bar Codes application on your G1

It's all about orientation: the Compass Mode                                                                                              

The new T-Mobile G1 Android Phone released on October 21, 2008 has a new application - the Compass Mode. This new mode is in fact a digital compass that orients Google Map’s Street View according to the position of the viewer.

To set this mode on your G1 you have to follow the steps:

     1. Open Google Maps and press the “Menu” key.
     2. Choose “Map Mode”.
     3.
Go to the bottom and start “Street View”; in “Street View”, Google Maps will color in blue the streets that are available in this mode.
     4.
Go to the area you wish to see.
     5. Press down on the scroll ball and select the desired location.
     6.
In case compass mode is not activated at this point, go and press the “Menu” button, select “Compass MOode” and turn it on.

Shopping will never be the same: the new Read Bar Codes application by G1

For shopaholics and not only, the T-Mobile G1 Android Phone has incorporated the application - Read Bar Codes. This application uses the digital camera available in order to scan bar codes. Also, it can both scan and interpret 1D (striped) and 2D (square) bar codes.

With this application you can scan bar codes on different items, such as: books, CDs and can find out the cheapest place online where you can buy the item or the cheapest place in the local area. Even more, with the help of this feature you can compare prices, can read reviews about the product, can find similar items and can save the product to a wish list. In order to benefit from all these, you should know that the free applications available from the android market are:                            

BARCODE SCANNER: can scan and can recognize any bar code, in order to find the best price 

SHOPSAVVY: can compare prices both online and on the high street

COMPARE EVERYWARE: can scan bar codes and using Google Maps can give directions to local store

To install SHOPSAVVY on your G1 follow the steps:

     1. Press “Menu” and launch “Market Application”.
     2.
Select "Shopping”.
     3. Choose from the “Market Application” list the “SHOPSAVVY” option.
     4. Scroll down and install the application.
     5. Press “OK” button.
