HTC Smartphones: how Smart are they?

by Oana Pelineagra  |  June 19, 2009

In the past years a new brand has striven to consolidate its position on the 3 most important mobile markets: European, North American and Asian. The result is a new player on the smart phone market, and a new competitor for iPhone, Google G1 and Blackberry.

The High Tech Computer Corporation, widely known as HTC, is a company from Taiwan which has succeeded in the past three years – 2006, 2007 and 2008 to develop a strong phone brand and to gain world wide recognition. Their fame is due - to a large extent - to the use of “Microsoft Windows Mobile” and of “Android” as operating systems for their phones. Moreover, HTC has developed the hardware for the T-Mobile G1 Android phone.

On the world wide market, HTC is present with more products: phones – S series and T series, android phones – A series, PDAs – P series and mobile computers – X series. The particularity of the HTC phones stands in the fact that the same mobile phone can have different names if is sold by different carriers and the only way to identify it correctly is by looking at its series.

Today on the market HTC has released two important mobile phone series: the S series – which are the Smartphones and the T series which represent the Touch phones. Among the newest smartphones available on the market is the HTC Snap. The phone was announced at the CTIA Wireless 2009 convention, which took place between 31 of March and 3rd of April. The “Snap”, in its real name HTC S522, is quite similar in appearance with a Blackberry and uses the operating system Windows Mobile 6.1.

The main novelty brought about by the new smartphone is the “Inner Circle” feature which offers the possibility “to prioritize messages from the most important people (…) at the press of a button”. Practically, one has easy access to an exclusive group of people. The feature is similar in theory with the “circle of trust” mentioned by Robert De Niro in the movie “Meet the Parents”. Remember!? Even more, the HTC phone has a full QWERTY keyboard, a 2 MP camera, HSDPA connectivity and a thickness of only 12 millimeters. From its design and features we can say that the “Snap” addresses mainly the business area.

The newest Touch phones – HTC Touch Pro 2 and HTC Touch Diamond 2 offer a different vision over the mobile phones and more possibilities. Both phones have an elegant and smooth design and of course, a touch-sensitive screen of – 3.6 inches for the Pro 2 and of 3.2 inches for the Diamond 2. The memory capacity is identical: 512 MB of ROM and 288 MB of  RAM. If the PRO 2 has a camera of only 3.2 MP (still bigger than the iPhone 2 MP camera ), the Diamond 2 has a 5 MP color camera with auto focus and both phones have a second VGA CMOS camera. The phones use as an operating system  Windows Mobile Professional, can be used as a GPS and support video and audio formats. The main difference between the 2 is that the PRO 2 is a slider phone and the Dimond 2 is a candy bar type of phone. More technical specifications about the 2 touch phones can be found on the htc.com site.

What makes HTC different from its competitors is the wide variety of phones with an even wider variety of options which is able to please almost every exigency. So, how smart are the HTC Smartphones? Smart enough to be regarded as a tough competitor by iPhone, G1 and Blackberry.
