Nintendo Wii: Reinvents the Play

by Collin Hilder  |  June 25, 2009

By now 50 million people – according to the declarations of CEO, Satoru Iwata, from March 2009 - know exactly what is a Wii. Nintendo Wii, called initially Nintendo Revolution, was launched on November 19, 2006 and since that point on has succeeded to conquer a wide range of people: of all sorts of ages and backgrounds. Practically, the fifth home console from Nintendo has reinvented the play and fun by bringing sports indoors. With an initial cost of $250, Wii is still hard to find in stores.

Nintendo Wii owes its success – to a large extent – to the interactivity feature, succeeding to make the player a part of the game and not just an external figure. So, when You play, You are really playing. The main tools which make all these possible are: a wireless remote controller which benefits from an accelerometer and an infrared detection feature and it's able to detect movements in all 3 dimensions, a sensor bar and the Wii console.

From the beginning the Wii console was intended as a fun, easy to use game tool, able to bring together family and friends and not as a powerful game console. For this reason, Nintendo was not afraid to cut off from the graphics capabilities. Although its main competitors Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 criticize this latter aspect, the same CEO - Satoru Iwata – explains that their main purpose is "not thinking about fighting Sony, but about how many people we can get to play games".

With a family – friendly look and with a smooth, clean design, the seventh generation console is much more smaller than its predecessors, occupying less space. Moreover, the compatibility with Nintendo GameCube offers the player twice more games to play. Also, the WI – FI connectivity opens the doors to an entire “Game Library” and to other services, such as the Forecast or the News Channel and allows the user to surf the Net with the help of the Opera browser.

When it comes to controllers, apart from the Wii remote – which benefits from a built in speaker and the “Nunchuk” - which will connect to the remote and will allow character movement, the user can buy a “Classic Controller” in order to be able to play all the classic Nintendo games.

The increasing popularity of Nintendo Wii is also due to the increasing popularity of the Wii Sports. The game is sold together with the Wii console and it is a part of the game series called: “Wii Series”. Playing indoors tennis, baseball, golf, boxing or bowling has never been more fun and easy. With the help of the controller you can swing, hit and simulate other actions specific to each game. Even more, you can create a Mii avatar to represent you in the game – wherever it is supported such a feature.

Nintendo Wii has changed the way we imagine a home console and has reinvented the way we play. Thanks to the advancement in technology and a little bit of imagination, a new play environment was created more friendly and fun than ever before.
