The Orange Box
Developer: Valve Software
Publisher: EA Games
Release date: October 10, 2007
Genre: Sci-Fi first person shooter
Modes: Single player, multiplayer
Synopsis: The Orange Box is a compilation of five complete games: Half-Life 2, with its two episodes (Episode One and Episode Two), Team Fortress 2 and a popular novelty at that time, Portal.
Half-Life 2 is the sequel to Half-Life and inserts new concepts in the game, like Physics-bases puzzles and vehicle sections. The action takes place in City 17 and nearby areas as the player takes on the role of scientist Dr. Gordon Freeman. The player finds himself in a broken society, where the aftermath of the events from Half-Life are now reaching their full extent in consequences, and he will be forced to fight against more and more enemies, with apparent no chance of survival. He is aided by various allies, such as former Black Mesa colleagues, oppressed citizens of City 17, and the Vortigaunts from the Xen alien world.
Team Fortress 2 is a multiplayer team-based first person shooter type of game that was first available as part of The Orange Box. This game is also a sequel to the original Quake mod, Team Fortress, and Valve's Half-Life mod, Team Fortress Classic. The basic storyline is that two competing teams attack each other in order to achieve certain objectives, such as capturing command points or defending them from attacks, or seizing flags. Players can select a character from the set of nine available classes, each with different strengths and weaknesses. Unlike previous games, Team Fortress 2 is not reality driven, so graphics and animation are portrayed rather artistically.
Portal is a single-player first person action / puzzle game and was first available as part of The Orange Box game compilation. The game basically includes a series of puzzles that can be solved by creating portals through which the player and simple objects can be teleported in order to reach the exit point. The thrill and fun of the game are given by this very portal system and the unusual physics it creates.
