Seven Pounds
Movie Review
Genre: Drama
Cast: Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson, Barry Pepper, Joe Nunez,
Director: Gabriele Muccino
The movie is directed by the same directors and producers that helped create “In Pursuit of Happiness”, one of Smith's acting masterpieces. So this should point out some clues as how this movie will develop, the genre and what it's all about...although the folks at Columbia Pictures kept their mouths tightly shut and didn't let out any details about the plot in adds.
So when you don't know what a movie is all about, you are not really keen on seeing it, if you're imagination isn't stirred by anything. But I would say that the trust and waiting invested into seeing the movie pay off in the cathartic and crazy end. The very general plot is something like this: Will Smith plays an IRS agent with a secret that goes forth into redeeming the lives of seven different persons, one of which, Rosario Dawson, he will fall in love with. If you think that's tacky and cheesy (like you might have thought when hearing about “Pursuit of Happiness”!), do not be fooled, because what this movie essence and Oscar material is acting. And Will does everything in it. You come to hate him, despise him and love him and you won't know if it's the real thing until the very end.
The soundtrack and imagery combine gracefully and provide really enjoyable moments, like the beach house and the moments between Will and Rosario, who plays a young woman with a terrible heart illness. The relentless close-ups on Will's facial expression do not wear it off, but instead build up Will's character and the audience's trust in him. If anyone could have sustained such a pressure almost by himself, surely Will Smith is one of the actors that are capable of performing with such passion and talent.
This is a movie to be seen, as it may be the only one from last year's releases that really bring an experience for the viewer, in which one could be inspired to review his life's mistakes and promises to others and to oneself.
