Get Him to the Greek – Movie Review

Director: Nicholas Stoller
Cast: Jonas Hill, Rusell Brand, Rose Byrn, Sean Coms, Lars Ulrich, Pink, Cristina Aguilera,
Gender: Comedy
Runtime: 109 min

First time I've heard about this movie I was wondering who is "HIM" and what's the deal with the "Greek". Well, let me enlighten you a little bit: "Him" is no one else than a Brit rock star played by Russel Brand, and the "Greek"  from the title "Get Him to the Greek",  is a California theater where the Brit rock star has to perform. Did you get it? I think maybe not so much, so let me explain it with more details.

Russel Band is playing the famous and decadent rock star Aldous Snow (whom we all know from "Forgetting Sarah Marshall") and Jonas Hill (known from "Superbad" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall") is playing Aaron, a no-level employee of a record label company. Everything is simple until now, the hard and funny part comes when Aaron receives a new, simple assignment from his boss, Sergio (played by Sean Combs aka P. Diddy) and he has to: go to London, pick up Aldous Snow, make a pit stop in New York for attending "Today" show and then fly to Los Angeles for the big comeback concert of the Brit rock star. And that's not all, the most important part of his task is to keep Aldous Snow SOBER! But as you can guess, there are a few problems on the road, and so the fun starts.

Although Aldous Snow was a big rock star in the past, now he is a shallow of that rock star: in the present he is known just for his drug issues and his crazy partying. All this happened after his last album was the biggest failure in the history of music, and the love of his life and mother of his child, Jackie Q (Rose Byrne) has left him. Our good fellow, Aaron has three days to accomplish his assignment or his job is in jeopardy. The main question of the movie is how far will you go to move up in your career or just to keep your job?

Aldous and Aaron are staying in line at the airport security before their flight from London to New York, and Aldous insists that Aaron does him a favor. One favor that raises a lot of issues for Aaron, and he has to make a tough and sensitive decision. Spoiler Alert! he has to decide whether he is going to help Aldous Snow pass through the security line a packet of heroine or not. And if yes, how is he supposed to do that? Maybe by sticking the packet of heroin up his...you know what? A lil too much for a job or a rock idol, don't you think? Of course I 'm not going to tell you what he's going to do eventually :)

Well, our boys on their way to Los Angeles make a pit stop to Las Vegas to meet Aldous's father, a Las Vegas musician, and Jackie Q, now the girlfriend of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. It's obvious that all these adventures will bond Aldous and Aaron, and not in a classical way, but in the twisted way of Jude Apatow (the producer). The touch of Jude Apatow can be felt during the entire movie: from the classical situation - one meets long time idol, to Aaron believes that he and his girlfriend, a medical student Daphne (played by Elisabeth Moss, whom we all know from "Mad Man") have split up, so he doesn't feel guilty about his outrageous behavior.

Sooner than later, Aaron's girlfriend drops the scene and Aaron is now free to enjoy the rock and roll lifestyle with Aldous, who turns out that he doesn't have enough power and organs to support a lifestyle based on drugs, alcohol and sex. As you can imagine, the movie ends with a "Just-say-No to the Drugs" scene.

"Get Him to the Greek" is a mouth of good, fresh air for the comedy gender, and to be honest, I have to admit that I haven't laughed so hard since "The Hangover".
