Julie & Julia

Movie Review

Genre: comedy-drama
Cast:
Amy Adams, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, Chris Messina
Director:
Nora Ephron

In a time when most directors invest a lot of effort and money into special effects, and when the place of actors is taken by robots, here is a movie that tries to conquer us through the art of cooking. Julie & Julia is a charming movie which tells the story of two women: Julia Child and Julie Powell, and their attempt to define themselves through cooking.

The director Nora Ephron offers us a parallel between two worlds: Paris (1940) and Manhattan (2002) linked together only by the joie of cooking. If on one hand we have the story of the frustrated corporatist worker Julie, played by Amy Adams, on the other we have the story of the famous cook chef Julia, played exquisitely by Meryl Streep. The liaison that brings the two women together is the Julie/Julia Project: Julie's ambition to cook in 365 Days, 524 Recipes from Child's book “Mastering the Art of French Cooking", and to blog about the results. Whoever said that a modern woman can't cook French cuisine, couldn't be more wrong :).

The movie contains biographical facts taken from the two bestsellers: "Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously " written by Julie Powell, and "My life in France", an autobiography of Julia Child written by Alex Prud'homme. Apart from Streep and Adams, the movie also hosts Stanley Tucci who plays the role of Paul, Child's supportive husband, and Chris Messina who is Eric, Julia's patient and understanding husband.

Meryl Streep does a delightful job in playing Child, and in reminding us that it's enough to want something in order to succeed. Even more, the movie is so inspirational that it could make even a woman like Carry Bradshaw go into the kitchen and try to cook something.
