Star Trek (2009)

Movie Review

Genre: Sci - Fi
Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, Winona Ryder, Eric Bana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Jennifer Morrison
Director: J. J. Abrams

First of all, I have to state that I'm not and never was a major Star Trek fan... until now. I guess that the major disadvantage of earlier series were the limited digital means that didn't cut it when it came to picturing intergalactic travels of ships or wars. Remember the white plastic miniature ships, running along wires? Well, although the former Star Trek series have gathered a serious number of mega fans, no episode or movie has, until now, related to such a wide audience, and succeeded to mesmerize them.

This movie has it all. It has the actors, it has Leonard Nimoy (God, you have to see that episode from “The Big Bang Theory” when Sheldon – a wanna be Spock geek, receives a tissue with an autograph and some DNA sample from Nemoy and says: “Oh, Great! Now I can make my own Leonard Nimoy!”; it's freaking hilarious, seriously), it has the underlying romantic plot between Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana), it has teen rebels, rocking audio and visual effects, a symphonic soundtrack, planet explosion and the list can go on.

Basically, the plot revolves around a distortion in time, where Nero (Eric Bana), “the last Romulan”, creates a massive implosion that turns into a worm hole (or static electricity storm, I'm not sure), that sends him and his giant bug-like ship back into the past, where he waits for Spock to terminate him and his world, Vulcan. That's why the movie sports two Spocks also. No super paradox here for matter from alternate dimension to come into one, like “Back into the future”.

James Kirk (Chris Pine) does a wonderful job at managing not to transform the movie into a teen flick about adolescent crises and the rest of the cast works admirably well together. The credit for directing the movie goes to the (in)famous “Lost” director J.J. Abrams, who, although obviously didn't spend his budget  on actors, did a great job at meeting expectations of every Trekker in the cinema, as well as creating other Star Trek addicts, such as myself, that are desperately awaiting news about sequels for this hyper entertaining movie.

Well, I'm not gonna say more, but definitely do yourself a favor and go see this movie. Until next week,

Beam me up, Scotty!
