Samsung Blue Earth eco-friendly mobile phone
October 14, 2009
Samsung has made a small step for the mobile market, but a giant one for the environment. At least, we hope so. Their latest mobile device, called Blue Earth, that was released at the Mobile World Congress technology event in Barcelona, is a phone that uses solar power to charge itself.
Resembling the shape of a shiny blue pebble, Blue Earth uses a small solar panel on the back to acquire power. It is a touchscreen phone made from recycled plastic water bottles, and features a special “Eco Mode” in which users can benefit from the most optimized use of energy from the device.
The phone requires around 10 to 14 hours for a full solar charge that will provide 4 hours of talk time, while it can also be charged through a conventional plug. The solar panel maximizes the power input in the phone.
The phone is also equipped with a built-in pedometer that can measure how much the carbon foortprint of the user is reduced when walking, instead of driving a car. Blue Earth does not include any polluting materials, such as Beryllium, Phthalte or Brominated Flame Retardants. Currently it is released in Sweden, and later on this year it will also appear in UK.
