Free navigation app from Google
October 28, 2009
The application will, of course, be targeted at Android mobile phones, on which Google will not encounter any problem in bundling the system with its own apps. Carriers that are already offering such a service (like AT&T and Verizon) won't have much to say, as Android mobile phones go at least.
All of these are just rumors or opinions expressed by current navigation service providers in a Forbes magazine article, who feel that Google's previous actions have all led to the purpose of amassing a large quantity of nav data all over the world. Quite reasonably, they also feel that Google might be preparing to release a free ad-supported navigation app. Needless to say, everyone likes free stuff, although ads may appear somewhere on the device screen or spoken out loud during turn-by-turn instructions. “Keep straight ahead until you reach X, or turn right here and stop at McDonalds for the 2 McBurgers at the price of one offer.” Funny or annoying? Either way, Google already has adds on the iPhone Maps app and the Mountain View company is trying to replace the licensed data from Tele Atlas with its own US maps. We'll just have to wait and see if this is an area where Google wants to be known as well.
