WebOS 1.4 update available

March 1, 2010

The latest version of Palm's operating system for mobile phones, webOS 1.4,  has been made available throughout the weekend, and most Palm Pre and Pixi phones already have the update installed and working.

While not including any new applications, the update has some interesting and really important features added to the existing framework, namely the ability to record videos, and edit them right from the phone, and the Flash 10.1 support, available through the App catalog as a download plugin.

The good news revolves around the Flash support, which has been a subject for serious controversies around the web lately, as major new products like the iPad were launched without any hope for this plugin. Manufacturers like Apple consider that the “future” of web browsing lies in the imminent but distant adoption of the standard HTML 5. As Palm has shown this is not quite true, and Flash still holds a good grip on web apps right now, with thousands of games and videos still viewable only by Flash support.

Related to the webOS 1.4, other improvements were made to the overall organization of the calendar, with better syncing methods, and the ability to record and edit videos on the go. The Palm user can upload the videos he made directly from the phone on networks like Youtube or Facebook and share them online. Contacts agenda has been also improved, also email capabilities and memo notifications. The system is said to work better and faster with the new update, and the battery lasts longer as a Wi-Fi improvement that turns off the feature when the phone is idle saves some battery life. To check the full list of improvements visit Palm's official website.
