Favorite PSP Games / Week 3

by Joshua Mitchell  |  March 25, 2009

This week games are all about speed, more speed and need for speed. For certain, you already think about one specific game and with it I am going to start:

Need  for Speed

It is one of the most popular and loved racing video games of all times, that has succeeded  to remain a PSP favorite. At first it was a console racing game, afterwards has become a movie  (remember Vin Diesel from “The Fast and the Furious”?) and now it is an appreciated PSP game.

The PSP versions are: Need for Speed: Most Wanted 5 -1- 0 and Need for Speed: Underground Rivals, both released in 2005, Need for Speed: Carbon – Own the city, released in 2006, Need for Speed: Undercover, released in 2008 and Need for Speed: Shift, released in 2009. All games have been developed by the company EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts. The story line is the classic race between the best equipped and customized cars, on the best soundtracks.

Even played on a PSP, the game succeeds to deliver a firm sense of speed, thanks to the detailed environments, good controls and the wide variety of cars (more than 20 models) that escape from illicit street racing and police pursuits. In few word it is an “oldie but goody” game. The price of the game is more or less $20.

If you have a bigger need for speed the next game, for sure, is going to satisfy it:

Burnout Legends

The PSP game appeared on the market in 2005, published by the company EA Games and has as a story line the traditional “crash - filled” competition between racing cars, only that this time, the racing modes can unlock new tracks and new cars - that means more excitement and more speed for you.

Although it is said to borrow some elements from the console Burnout, due to a great frame rate and awesome sound effects the sense of speed becomes realistic. The game makes a fantastic use of the PSP technology, transforming it into a nice audio – video experience. Burnout Legends benefits from wireless multi player mode and has as main controls: gas, brake  and of course, boost. The price does not exceed $20.

Not enough speed for you? then add some nitro, in the last game of the week:

Ridge Racer

The arcade – style racing game was developed by the company Namco for the Play Station Portable in 2005. Ridge Racer benefits from good quality graphics and an even better sound, put to a good use by the fantastic soundtracks. The storyline presents the classic competitive race inside the circuits, and this time, they are quite intense. The game has some common gameplay elements with the previous console versions, but are put to a better use on the PSP.

The nicest feature of the game, in my opinion, is that you can unlock more tracks and faster cars as you win races. But the big plus of the game is brought by the “nitro boosts“ – that means even more speed and fun for you. Add also some multyplayer features and enhanced car design and you have an almost real racing experience. The game can be bought for $20.
