PSP: How to upgrade the firmware?

by Brad Larson  |  February 18, 2009

First of all, a firmware is an internal program that helps to function and control an electronic product, such as a PSP. It is recommended to update the firmware of your device every time a new version is released, for a better functionality and at the same time for acquiring new features.

Usually the firmware updates are free of charge. In the case of PSP the latest firmware version was released on January 20, 2009 and has the version number 5.03. This new version increases software stability, while preserving the features from previous versions.

In order to install it, just follow these steps:

 1. Charge the PSP battery.
 2. Connect the AC adapter to the PSP.
 3. Connect your PSP to a PC using an USB cable or connect a Memory Stick USB to the PC in the memory stick slot of the PC.
 4. On the Memory Stick Duo connected to the PC, create a "PSP folder"; inside the PSP folder make a "Game folder"; inside the "Game folder" create an "Update folder".
 5. Go to the PSP official website: www.us.playstation.com
 6. Press Support and then click on Version 5.03.
 7. Scroll down on the page and press "Update" using a PC.
 8. Click on "Download Now" and save the file: EBOOT.PBP in the "Update folder".
 9. Insert the Memory Stick Duo in the PSP.
10. Press "Game" then press "Memory Stick" and start the update.
11. After the update was completed, confirm the update.
