Although just a simple mechanic, Carter Chambers is a man of great cultural knowledge that has been married for forty-five years years with beloved wife, Virginia, and has two sons, one a lawyer and the other engineer, and a violinist daughter. Edward Cole is a skeptic, bitter billionaire, owner of several hospitals in which he applies his economy policy of not having private rooms.
The two meet when each of them are diagnosed with terminal illnesses and share the same hospital room. After spending time together and getting to know each others fears and dreams, Edward finds in the trash can a note containing a list of Carter's wishes before death. He convinces Carter that he should follow those dreams and they both set about a beautiful journey around the world, a journey of self-discovery, friendship and forgiveness.
