In the early 20th century, Daniel Plainview seeks power and wealth at any cost. He is a charismatic and fearless oil prospector, so madly driven by success and the fail of others. After hearing about a promising oil land in California that comes at a low price, he sets about and establishes his operations there.

He starts manipulating and exploiting local people and uses his adoptive son H.W. to act as a cover image for a loving father. In time, gaining the trust of poor people by promising them new schools, cultivated land and a rich community, he gains everything he wants bu along with the growth of power and richness his deep ugly personality surfaces, slowly tearing him apart through madness and hatred.
