After months of speculations and a mysterious lost phone, on June 7, at the WWDC in San Francisco, Steve Jobs unveiled the newest, glossiest, and topnotch smartphone: iPhone 4. The successor of the iPhone 3G S brings in a new design, several new features and a new smartphone concept: Face Time.

Presented as a the phone who reinvents the iPhone, Apple's newest smartphone wants to change the way we use our phone, the way we take pictures, the way we take videos, the way we surf the net, and the way we interact with one another. iPhone 4 is not just a phone, is a complex gadget ready to satisfy our urban needs.

Hardware

iPhone 4 comes in a new, fresh design, which preserves the curves of the original iPhone, but adds up new elements, such as a stainless steel band which incorporates three antennas. The front and back of the iPhone is made out of "two panels of chemically strengthened aluminosilicate glass".

In terms of dimensions, iPhone 4 is similar to its relative 3G S, and the only thing that differs is the depth: only 0.37 inch in comparison to 0.48 inch.

The "Retina display" is another novelty brought about by Apple. Thanks to a 960 x 640 resolution, and a contrast ratio of 800:1, this 3.5 inch multi-touch display is capable of rendering rich colors and to offer a crystal crisp image.

iPhone 4 has a 5MP camera which comes with a built in LED flash, plus a 5 x digital zoom, and that's not all. Apple's latest phone also has a second VGA camera that is used for video calling. Although this is not a new feature, iPhone 4 reinvents video calling, and with the tap of a button one can share the most personal moments in his life with family and friends.

The recording mode has also suffered an improvement, and now one can record and then edit HD videos "in 720p at 30 frames per second".

In terms of memory, iPhone 4 comes with 512 MB eDRAM, but has a storage capacity up to 32 GB (flash memory). The built-in rechargeable battery (as always) lasts up to 7h of talk time on 3G, and 14h on 2G, and up to 6h of Internet (on 3G).

Apart from all these, the newest iPhone comes with 2 microphones, digital compass and 3-axis gyroscope and accelerometer.

Software

Although it's pretty hard to top such hardware specifications, iPhone 4 brings in also some pretty neat software specs. One of them is multitasking. It's true that it took Apple some time to implement this feature, but it's finally here? Now, one can run 3rd party app and switch between them, with only one tap. This feature works pretty swell, as it doesn't affect the performance of the phone. What's even great about it, is the fact that the phone will remember where you left off, so you can continue your work / game / search…etc.

Another waited app is the "Folders for Apps", which enables the user to keep his apps tidy and to organize them into folders. Other apps which come with iPhone 4 are: iBooks, iMovie, Maps + Compass, and other more can be purchased at the App Store.

iPhone 4 is the first smartphone to run FaceTime, and to make a video call with another iPhone 4 via a Wi-Fi connection. As an OS, iPhone 4 runs iOS 4.0.

As a conclusion

No matter if you are a Steve Job's fan or not, you have to admit that iPhone 4 is a remarkable phone with a great design and powerful features. It's true that the features brought about by Apple are not entirely new, but they sure are more appealing to the crowd now. iPhone 4 stands the chance to be the smartphone that is going to make video calling popular, and that's definitely new.
