iPhone 3G S made to impreSS

by Frank Hedley  |  June 11, 2009

Almost one year has passed from the release of the iPhone 3G and the world prepares to embrace the newest iPhone model: iPhone 3G S. The smartphone was announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which takes place these days - between 8 and 12 June - at San Francisco, as a top news. Other important announcements made by Apple are the release of a new operating system “Mac OS X Snow” and price reduction for the iPhone smartphones.

The iPhone 3G S is due to be available in U.S.A starting with June 19, and in the rest of the world from July 9, 2009. The models available on the market will be the 16 GB sold at a price of $199 and the 32 GB available for $299. But, the minus is the fact that current iPhone users considered “non-qualified customers” by AT&T will not benefit from free upgrade and will end up paying even 700$ for the newest iPhone, the 32GB version. A big surprise is the cost reduction for the iPhone 3 G which will be purchased for only 99$.

The smartphone has obtain his “S” - from
speed - being twice faster than his relative - the iPhone 3G and having a data speed of 7.2 bps HSDPA; that means that you can view attachments, launch pages, start applications much faster than ever before.

Another improvement, long waited by the iPhone fans, is the enhancement of the photo camera. Taking into  account that now on the market are available smartphones with a 5 MP camera – see the HTC Touch Diamond 2 – an update was absolutely needed. So, the iPhone 3G S has a built-in camera of 3 MP with autofocus. Moreover, it's the first time when with an iPhone you can record, share and edit a VGA video.

Trying to keep up with the smartphones available now on the market, the “S” has incorporated a compass mode, as the Google G1, from a voice control feature which can enable a call and even can play music, from cut & copy & paste options and from a landscape mode keyboard for a more comfortable typing. When it comes to looks, the “S” preserves the classic, smooth design of the iPhone and is available in two colors: white and black.

Another aspect improved by Apple is the battery life. The newest iPhone talk time can last up to 12 hours on 2G talk and 15 hours on 3G, the Internet can be used up to 9 hours on WI-FI and you can play videos for a maximum of 10 hours and listen to music for an impressive 30 hours.

It's also important to mention that the “S” benefits from the “Find My iPhone“ option, which is a service for Mobile Me and which can find your iPhone by displaying its exact location and from the Nike + iPod workout support.

At WWDC was also presented the iPhone OS 3.0 Software update which will be free for all iPhone users, but some features will be only available for the owners of the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S. One of them is the long acclaimed MMS option which was said to be “supported” in the future but only by the iPhone 3G.

The iPhone 3G S, apart from being a “really fast phone” as Philip Schiller declared, represents Apple's attempt to reconquer the lost ground in favor of other smartphones and to satisfy the needs of its clients. It obvious that the “S” also stands for an improvement to the original iPhone ready to do all the things that the iPhone couldn't do in the past.
