Let’s cook with iPhone!
by Wendy Brighton | October 23, 2009
Thanks to the multitude of appliances and gadgets, the art of cooking has evolved a lot from the days of the simple stove. Now, even the most untalented and busy person can find her way and inspiration in the kitchen.
The cooking applications developed for iPhone make the process of cooking even more efficient and enjoyable, and taking into account the fact that there is an app available for every eating habit, one just needs to choose the most suitable application for her, turn on his iPhone and start cooking. To make the selection process even easier, I’ll present in the following paragraphs the most popular cooking apps for iPhone.
Before we get started just remember this: your iPhone is NOT an ingredient!! Be sure to keep it somewhere safe during the process of cooking. We don't think iPhones do too well if you stick them in dough and heat in ovens.
The first thing one needs to do, before getting ready to put his apron, is to make a grocery list and go buy the ingredients. At this stage, “Grocery iQ” is the most suitable tool. This application will give a hand in searching for specific grocery items, building a favorite list, sharing the list with someone else and even putting the items in store order. What this app can’t do is to save multiple shopping lists, enter prices or track costs. The “Grocery iQ” app is developed by Coupons. INC and is available in the App Store for only $1.
Now, having the ingredients, the difficult part is to choose what dishes to prepare. “Dinner Spinner” is a FREE application which will narrow down the cooking possibilities, according to the ingredients one has and to the amount of time it takes to prepare a dish, or by simply pressing the “Spin Categories” button, it will suggest a gourmet meal. The collection of recipes available is quite vast, starting with various appetizers, salads, main dishes and ending with desserts and drinks. This app is available on Allrecipes.com, or can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store.
Another similar, FREE app is the “Betty Crocker Mobile Cookbook”. With over 4000 recipes, this app will make sure that every dinner one cooks will be a different one. For an easy use, the application offers the possibility to search for recipes and ingredients, and every recipe has step-by-step photo instructions and nutritional information. To download this app, one just needs to go to the App Store.
The “Look and Taste” application video cookbook has more than 300 video recipes, which will teach almost anyone to cook like a pro. What’s neat about this app, is that is updated every month with new video recipes and it has over 400 glossary videos and chefs tips. The videos are very explicit and presented in a professional manner, making even the fanciest dinner to be easy to make. The Lookandtaste app can be downloaded from the iTunes Apps store and has a “spicy” price of $9.99.
"Jamie Oliver's 20 Minutes Meals” app will bring the charm of the famous cook into every kitchen, together with 50 ingenious recipes for the ones who don’t have too much time to cook, but enjoy eating well. The unique interface will allow instructions, images and videos to be accessed at a touch of a finger. Another interesting and useful feature of this app, is that each recipe comes with its own list of ingredients, which is linked to an interactive and sharable grocery list. Not to mention the fact that every recipe is accompanied by the personal notes and tips of Jamie, this app is worth spending $8 on the App Store.
After such a journey into the modern cooking world, all is left to do is to start the iPhone and the cooktop, and enjoy a home made dinner. Bon Appetite!
