Who is “simply the best”: iPhone or Blackberry?
by Frank Hedley | March 12, 2009
In 2007 the smartphone market changed immediately and irrevocably at the arrival of the iPhone. But the most affected by the appearance of this new and shinny gadget was the Blackberry. In few months the beloved berry became obsolete and its place was taken rapidly by the new multimedia device: the iPhone. Some even feared that the Blackberry will go extinct, but its' story is far from being ended.
The best part when a new, revolutionary gadget enters the market, is that it triggers competition and with competition comes better technologies and more diversity and with them come better offers for the clients. So, Blackberry did what every other respectable gadget would have done: reinvent itself and face the new challenge. As a result, RIM released in 2008 the Blackberry Bold and the Blackberry Storm and in 2009 the Blackberry Curve 8900. It is even said to have stormed their way to the new emerging smartphone market.
The new Blackberries were redesigned to be more consumer friendly and more similar to a multimedia device. The 3 new gadgets define 3 new improved directions for Blackberry.

In comparison to these 3 gadgets, the iPhone has a better browser - Safari, a bigger screen (almost twice as big), a longer battery life, better e-mail application and an easier zoom in /out. On the other hand, it has only a 2.0 MP camera, no landscape touchscreen keyboard, no MMS possibility, no voice command system and no video recording.
To sum it up, the similarities between iPhone and Blackberry are quite big, but the differences could be vital for a user. These characteristics and much more, made the reports of 2008 show, for the first time, a small sale difference in Apple's favor. The difference is said to be quite frail and unimportant, and only the future can tell if Apple will succeed to take the lead in the smart phone market segment.
In the mean time, a large part of the Blackberry users remain faithful to the brand and immune to Apple's charms, especially the corporate users. In this case, it's up to the future to tell who is going to obtain the supremacy in this domain or if the supremacy will be divided in a friendly, fruitful manner.
