iPod Touch and iPod Nano: The Makeover

by Brad Larson  |  September 21, 2010

September was a busy month for Apple, the first day of fall brought iPod Touch and iPod Nano a makeover both in terms of design and features. The enhanced versions of Touch and Nano generated a lot of buzz at the Apple Special Event held in San Francisco. Another star of the event was the Apple TV, will cover this subject in October in the "More Gadgets" section, so stay tuned!

On September 1, Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, did once again a great job presenting the new Apple devices and convincing his audience that they are worth buying. So, let's see what improvements bring about the new iPod Touch and iPod Nano:

The New iPod Nano

Design

In terms of looks the new iPod Nano has suffered a complete makeover:

  • It is smaller: 1.48 x 1.61 x 0.35 inches, 0.74 ounce, being more similar to the iPod Shuffle than to the iPod Nano 5th Generation (it is almost half its size).
  • Instead of the scrolling wheel the new iPod Nano has a multi-touch display. The color display is 1.5 inch big and has a resolution of 240 x 240 pixels.
  • The only buttons are "Sleep/Wake" and "Volume".
  • It comes in 7 glossy "anodized aluminum" colors.
  • Has a built-in clip for a secure grip.
  • Comes with a 30-pin connector

Features

  • The "Shake to shuffle" feature gives you the possibility to shake the iPod in order to change the song that's playing.
  • The "Genius" feature finds similar songs in your playlist and allows you to make genius playlists.
  • The "FM tuner" gives you access to various radios.
  • The "Pedometer" functionality helps you keep track of your exercise goal, by counting your steps.
  • The "VoiceOver" feature keeps you informed on the name of the artist or the song that's playing.

The new iPod Nano comes with a memory capacity of 8GB or 16GB, has a lithium-ion battery which can last up to 24h of music playback, and can be purchased for $149 (the 8GB model) or $179 (the 16GB model).

The New iPod Touch

Presented by Steve Jobs as the "no.1 portable game player in the world", succeeding to surpass competitors such as Nintendo and Sony, the iPod Touch has suffered a mild change in design, but a more radical change in features, making the New Touch resemble its relative - iPhone 4.

Design

  • The new iPod Touch is thinner and lighter than its predecessor: 4.4 x 2.3 x 0.2 inches, 3.56 ounces.
  • The 3.5 multi-touch display has been enhanced, and the new Touch has a "Retina display": a backlit LCD with a resolution of 960 x 640 pixels.
  • The new iPod Touch comes with two built-in cameras: the rear camera is capable of video recording in HD mode (720p), while in the front it has a VGA camera.
  • The Apple A4 processor brings more power to the iPod's features, allowing you to edit videos or to benefit from multitasking.

Features

  • Similar to iPhone 4, the new iPod Touch comes with the "FaceTime" functionality. This means that thanks to the two cameras, you can see what your friend is doing. A ll you need is a Wi-Fi connection and an Apple ID + an email account.
  • The "Edit" functionality gives you the possibility to edit the videos you made with the HD camera.
  • The built-in accelerometer and the gyroscope make the iPod Touch to be a great gaming device capable of "more gestures and more higher precision".
  • The "Voice Control" feature helps you change the song that's playing by using a spoken command.

On the market there are available three iPod Touch models: the 8GB which can be bought for $229, the 32GB which is sold for $299, and the 64GB has a price of $399.
